About Us

 

Nisga’a Ts’amiks Vancouver Society - the Purposes of the Society are:

      To enhance the social, economic, physical, cultural and spiritual well being of Nisga’a citizens whose ordinary residence is within the Lower Mainland of British Columbia or the greater Victoria or Nanaimo areas of the Vancouver Island, by:

o   providing liaison and contact between Nisga’a Government and Nisga’a citizens within the Region;

o   Informing Nisga’a Government about the views of Nisga’a citizens within the Region

o   administering, delivering, promoting, arranging or facilitating the delivery of social, medical, educational or other programs or services for the benefit of Nisga’a citizens within the Region;

o   co-operating with service, government and other organizations which concern themselves with the advancement of Nisga’a citizens and other aboriginal people

o   promoting fitness, athletics and access to recreational facilities and related opportunities for Nisga’a citizens within the Region

o   preserving the Nisga’a language, culture, traditions and history through any appropriate means, including

§  public education

§  assisting and supporting the repatriation of Nisga’a cultural artifacts

§  Promoting and protecting Nisga’a spirituality.

In the Works

Currently NTVS is working on a cultural revitalization plan for the societies membership that include:

      Cultural Daycare facility

·         A key initiative that will aim to provide all the standard functions of daycare for children age 3 to 5 years of age but will incorporate some of the basics of our Nisga’a Culture such as counting, word association, storytelling.

      Cultural & Language Classes

o   This fund will provide the society membership, at no cost to them, an opportunity to attend workshops that will teach the basics of our Nisga’a Culture that includes writing, reading and speaking Nisga’a.

 NTVS Summary of Annual Assistance Available to the Nisga’a Citizens in the GVRD and surrounding areas:

      Nisga’a Community Services Incentives (NCSI)

      Education Grant Kindergarden to Grade 12

      Grad Education Gift

      Disability

      Approval for all of the above requests is subject to confirmation of citizenship and supporting documentation.

Nisga’a Community Services Incentives

      This fund is designed to assist Nisga’a families with children (18 years or younger) who are already partaking in or who are interested in a recreational activity. NTVS currently sponsors individual applications as well as group applicants.

    Education Grant Kindergarden to Grade 12 Students

      This fund is designed to assist Nisga’a families with children ( in Kindergarten to Grade 12) with school supplies.

Grad Education Gift

      This fund is a token to Grade 12 students in acknowledgement of their high school graduation

    

 Common Goal

NTVS works with and assists other Urban organizations and Nisga'a entities to enhance the overall well being of the Nisga'a citizens living in the GVRD and Vancouver Island, such as:

      Nisga’a Elder’s Society

      Vancouver Nisga’a Youth Advisory Council

      Git Ts’amiks Cultural Dancers

 Cultural Events

NTVS hosts yearly cultural events which all of the Nisga’s citizens, within the GVRD and surrounding areas, are invited to attend.

The following is a list of some of the cultural events that have been hosted by NTVS in the past:

      Christmas Party

      Hobiyee

      Graduation Luncheon/Dinner

      Nisga’a Day

      Summer Celebration

In addition to yearly cultural events, NTVS also offers Nisga’a Citizens the opportunity to attend or register for beneficial workshops and events that may be offered in the area. The following is a list of some of the events that are or have been offered to the NTVS membership:

Currently NTVS is working on an economic development plan that will provide the following for the society’s membership:

Workshops

This fund will provide the society membership, at no cost to them, an opportunity to attend a workshop that will aid them in developing a more viable business plan.
